Preventing Burnout

William ‘Buddy’ Porcelli, 200RYT and Cyber Security Professional

If a packed schedule and busy day keep you from caring for yourself then daily burnout happens quickly. In turn this really threatens your health and overall wellbeing. Selfcare can be part of your tool kit to more than just survive but prevent burnout for good. Integrating selfcare into your busy life is possible.

Burnout means you are physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted (literally being drained of air) usually caused by the chronic stressors in your life. If you feel like you are overworked or unfulfilled at work or at home, you might have the symptoms of burnout. The affects can be realized by you and your loved ones that is why self-care is so important.

So, what might be holding you back from selfcare? Maybe you haven’t yet given yourself permission to pause and breathe. The word prana meaning breath comes from Sanskrit, and is considered our life force, the energy that flows through all things. It is thought to connect us with all other living beings. Just breathing, the involuntary or voluntary act, can help you prevent burnout and improve your overall wellbeing.

As life gets busier and more stressful, many people turn to yoga, movement, or meditation to ‘chill out.’ A 2020 Vagaro survey revealed about 75% people polled think it helps with their stress levels. But almost 60% of people indicated they only do selfcare when stressed out. What if we prevented the burnout sooner? The same study showed people were rewarded by finding that selfcare boosted their self-confidence, made them more productive at work, and the best part is it makes them happier.

Think about making smaller changes like taking short breaks in your day and add mindful breathing. Start with 10 minutes daily or as much as possible. Add 10 minutes a week and take more time on weekends or whenever time allows.

We invite you to join any of our weekly classes of all levels taking place at Jen Murphy Gym at 113 W Hartford St, Milford, PA. If you are interested in a higher level of selfcare and learning, the Dharmachakra Yoga School 2024-2025 starts its 200 Hour Yoga Teacher modular trainings, 3 Modules Each meets 3 Weekends over 3 months, starts mid-September.

William ‘Buddy’ Porcelli was trained at Dharma Chakra Yoga School in 2023/24. He continues to explore the therapeutic effects of yoga and its positive affect on work-life balance. By day, he is a network and systems engineer with close to 20 years of experience, primarily in the financial industry.

See you on the mat!
